They used a device called "second generator" (with an open core, the predecessor of the transformer) to increase and decrease the voltage. The first closed core transformer with windings outside the core column was manufactured by M. Dery, O. Blathy and K. Zipernovsky on September 16, 1884 at the Ganz factory in Hungary. This transformer was a single-phase transformer with a capacity of 1400VA, a voltage ratio of 120/72V, and a frequency of 40Hz (see Figure 1-1). The term "transformer" was used for the first time in their patent application.
