What's Actually Inside a Power Transformer?
You walk past those humming green or gray boxes every day and probably never think twice. But what's really going on inside? These aren't just noisy metal cans - they're clever safety valves that tame the crazy-high voltage coming from power plants so it won't fry your appliances.
Picture voltage like water pressure. Power plants send electricity long distances using super-high pressure (step-up transformers) to avoid wasting energy as heat. Then, closer to your neighborhood, step-down transformers bring that pressure way down to safe levels.
Open one up (well, don't actually) and you'll find a pretty simple setup: a primary winding that takes the power in, a secondary winding that sends it out, and a laminated steel core in the middle. The wires never touch. Instead, electricity in the first coil creates a strong magnetic field. The steel core guides that invisible magnetic energy across to the second coil, which turns it back into electricity at a lower voltage. That's electromagnetic induction in action.
The coils are usually made of copper (more efficient but heavier and pricier) or aluminum (lighter and cheaper). Either way, moving that much power creates a ton of heat. That's why big outdoor transformers are filled with special dielectric oil. The oil cools the coils and insulates them to prevent sparks. Hot oil flows out to external radiator fins, cools down in the air, and cycles back in - like the transformer's own cooling system.
There's also a conservator tank on top to handle the oil expanding when it heats up, and a Buchholz relay that detects gas bubbles from faults and quickly cuts the power to avoid fires. You might even notice a little jar with silica gel beads that keeps moisture out.
