1. **INPUT HIGH VOLTAGE**: A step-down transformer receives high voltage from power lines. These power lines typically transmit high voltages to minimize energy loss and increase transmission efficiency.
2. **Magnetic flux action**: The primary winding of the transformer (i.e., the high voltage winding) receives this high voltage through electromagnetic induction. When the high voltage flows through the primary winding, it generates an alternating magnetic field in the winding.
3. **Induced Potential**: The secondary winding (i.e., low voltage winding) is located in the same magnetic field as the primary winding. Due to electromagnetic induction, this alternating magnetic field produces an induced potential in the secondary winding. The magnitude of the induced potential depends on the turns ratio of the winding, i.e. the ratio of the number of turns of the primary winding to the number of turns of the secondary winding. The turns ratio determines the voltage ratio.
4. **OUTPUT LOW VOLTAGE**: By the design of the turns ratio, the induced potential (and thus the output voltage) is lower than the voltage input to the primary winding. In this way, the step-down transformer reduces the high voltage to a low voltage suitable for use inside the building.
5. **Current change**: It is worth noting that during the step-down process, the current increases according to the principle of conservation of power. This is because power (voltage multiplied by current) remains constant in the transformer. Therefore, although the voltage is reduced, the current is increased to keep the total power constant.
6. **Providing Safe Power**: Finally, the reduced voltage is safely distributed through the distribution system to all parts of the building for use by various electrical equipment and systems.
Overall, step-down transformers are designed to provide safe and efficient voltage conversion from the power lines to the interior of the building through electromagnetic induction and turns ratio.
