What causes noice in power transformers

what causes noice in power transformers

The main reasons for the noise generated by the power transformer are as follows:

1. **Noise generated by the magnetic field**: transformers in the operation process will produce alternating magnetic field, which makes the iron core magnetostriction. Magnetostriction causes the iron core to vibrate periodically, thus generating noise. In addition, the size of the magnetic field is related to the size of the current and the number of turns in the coil, so larger currents and more turns may result in greater noise.

2. **Noise generated by mechanical vibration**: During the operation of the transformer, components such as the windings, the core and the cooling system interact with each other to generate mechanical vibration. The current in the winding will be subjected to electromagnetic force, resulting in vibration; the vibration of the iron core is caused by the attraction of the magnetic field; and the vibration of the cooling system is caused by mechanical force. These vibrations are transmitted to the transformer shell, thus generating noise.

3. **Aerodynamic noise**: the cooling fan in the transformer will produce aerodynamic noise during operation. This noise is related to the speed, size and design of the fan. If the transformer is poorly sealed or the vents are not reasonably designed, aerodynamic noise may also be generated.

4. **Transformer failure or abnormality**:
- Overloaded operation of the transformer may produce a heavy sound internally.
- When the transformer body parts produce looseness, a strong and uneven noise will be produced during operation.
- Unclamped silicon steel sheets in the outermost layer of the iron core may also cause vibration and noise.
- When the internal voltage of the transformer is too high, it may cause high voltage to be induced in the shell and core, which in turn generates noise.
- Poor contacts, breakdowns, short circuits and grounding inside the transformer may cause abnormal sounds.
- When the transformer generates harmonics or is connected to a large-capacity power-using device, it may also cause abnormal noises due to the high starting current generated.

Note that transformer noise and abnormal sounds are matters of concern because they may be related to transformer malfunction or improper operation. If a transformer is found to produce abnormal sounds, it should be promptly inspected and repaired to avoid possible malfunction and damage.
