what is the energy transformation that occurs in a coal burning power plant

The energy transformation that occurs in a coal burning power plant is primarily the conversion of the chemical energy of coal into electrical energy. This process can be divided into three main stages:

1. **Chemical energy into thermal energy**: Coal is burned in the boiler of a coal-fired power plant, releasing chemical energy that is converted into thermal energy, which heats the water in the boiler and converts it into high-temperature, high-pressure steam.

2. **Thermal energy is converted into mechanical energy**: this high temperature and high pressure steam enters the turbine through the pipes and pushes the turbine's blades to rotate, thus converting thermal energy into mechanical energy for the turbine.

3. **Mechanical energy is converted into electrical energy**: the rotation of the turbine drives the generator to rotate, and the magnetic field inside the generator interacts with the wires to produce an electric current, thus converting mechanical energy into electrical energy.

Therefore, the energy conversion process in a coal-fired power plant can be summarised as follows: chemical energy of coal → thermal energy → mechanical energy → electrical energy. This process requires the participation of equipment such as boilers, turbines and generators, and through a series of energy conversion processes, the goal of converting the chemical energy of coal into electrical energy is finally achieved.
