The characteristics of amorphous alloys are higher magnetic permeability and lower losses than oriented electrical steel strips, making them suitable for manufacturing transformers with lower losses and significant energy-saving effects. However, due to its low saturation magnetic flux density, thin thickness, difficult processing, and relatively high material price, although it has performed well in transformer manufacturing, it is still not widely used in the manufacturing of large capacity transformers.
In the mid-1960s, research on amorphous materials began abroad, and in 1974, it was discovered that iron-based amorphous alloys could be used to manufacture transformers. GE, the American company, was the first to manufacture 25kVA transformers using amorphous alloys for trial operation. Recently, 2500kVA transformers have been produced, with a no-load loss of only 845W (according to GB/T6451-2008, 2500kVA transformers, the allowable no-load loss is 2970W). Since 1986, there have been 60000 to 70000 amorphous alloy core transformers in operation in the United States, and operating experience has shown that their no-load performance is stable.

China began trial production of amorphous alloy transformers in 1986. In 1994, six transformer factories (Tianjin, Shanghai, Beier Transformer, Foshan, Liaoyang, and Baoding, using the design of Shenyang Transformer Research Institute) trial produced six transformer prototypes in four specifications: SH11-160 \ 200 \ 315 and 500KVA. They passed national appraisal in 1995.
