When Is The First Power Transformer Been Produced?

In 1882, Gaulard and Gibbs' AC power supply system was patented in the UK. They used a device called "second generator" (with an open core, the predecessor of the transformer) to increase and decrease the voltage.

The first closed core transformer with windings outside the core column was manufactured by M. Dery, O. Blathy and K. Zipernovsky on September 16, 1884 at the Ganz factory in Hungary. This transformer was a single-phase power transformer with a capacity of 1400VA, a voltage ratio of 120/72V, and a frequency of 40Hz (see below picture). The term "transformer" was used for the first time in their patent application.

This device was exhibited at the Budapest Exhibition in 1885.

American Westinghouse bought several AC voltage conversion devices and patents from Gonard and Gibbs, and began to redesign the machinery and electrical design. In 1886, the first transformer for AC lighting system was put into use and achieved success, and then this technology developed rapidly.

In 1890, Dolivo-Dobrowsky (M.O.Dolivo-Dobrowsky) of AEG (formerly General Electric Company of Germany) invented the three-phase power transformer.

Since the transformer was used for lighting in 1886 and was put into practical use, the voltage and capacity of AC transmission have increased rapidly. After the founding of New China in 1949, with the rapid development of the national economy, the power industry has also developed rapidly. Especially since the reform and opening up, the development speed of the power industry has been faster than before.

At present, the highest voltage of the power transformer is 1000KV. There is a 3*1000MVA transformers group installed in the Jindongnan substation.
